Brief Introduction of Bilateral Economic and Trade Ties between China and Suriname

China and Suriname established diplomatic relations on 28 May 1976. Since then the relations between the two countries has developed smoothly and bilateral economic and trade cooperation progressed steadily. Currently the economic and trade agreement between both countries includes the Trade Agreement signed in 1998.

Bilateral trade

In recent years, the bilateral trade grew steadyly. According to the statistics of China Customs, the bilateral trade volume between China and Suriname achieved a new high in 2006 reaching USD46.884 million, up 1.85% year-on-year. Among them, China export reached USD42.939 million, up 11% and import reached 3.945 million, down 46.3%. The bilateral trade volume during the first half of 2007 amounted to USD31.218 million, up 76.3% over the same period of 2006. Among them, China export reached USD29.496 million, up 84.9% and import reached USD1.721 million, up 2.2%.

The main products exported from China to Suriname include electromechanical products, textile clothing, plastic products, tire, motorcycle, firework, etc. And the main products imported from Suriname are alumina, wood & woodwork, etc.

Economic cooperation for mutual benefit

According to the statistics of MOFCOM, by the end of June 2007 China had fulfilled a turnover of USD164 million from the project engineering and labor service cooperation with Suriname. The direct investment from China to Suriname totaled USD13.02 million and the actual investment from Suriname to China arrived at USD19.37 million.
